A 125 Bultaco was the first bike Sheene raced. He crashed on his debut at Brands in March 1968, but scored a double a few weeks later. He is pictured here on a 125 Bultaco the following season at Oulton Park.

It all started here. Sheene and racer Gordon Keith, winner of the 1964 Manx Lightweight Grand Prix, pictured by Nick Nicholls at a Brands Hatch practice day on 17 February 1968 - two weeks before Sheene made his race debut at the Kent circuit on Saturday 2 March. Barry, 17, was there that February day to gently run in the engines of two Bultacos his father Frank had tuned for the coming season. Barry returned the following week to complete the job and went so well he ended up racing them. At the time, Frank was the famous Sheene because of his tuning talent and it was the bikes not the young rider, that made the picture newsworthy. (You tube)

Sheene loathed the Isle of Man, but raced many times at Scarborough's Oliver's Mount Circuit, a narrow, tree-lined pure road circuit where a memorial now stands at the startline in his honour. Here he is (41) pictured chasing his good friend and hero John 'Mooneyes' Cooper (1) and Steve Machin (19), the man who took advantage of Barry's decision to contest a big
money end of season meeting in America to nip ahead and snatch the 1971 250 British title from his grasp. The chasers are Derek Chatterton (35) and Cliff Carr (4). (You Tube)

Sheene believed that his mechanical knowledge made him a better rider. He is pictured here at Brands Hatch on 22 February 1981 working on his TZ750 Yamaha with engine tuning ace Erv Kanemoto and mechanic Ken Fletcher.

A word in your ear. And it probably wasn't a very pleasant one. Sheene felt Suzuki's recruitment of Wil Hartog (pictured) and Virginio Ferrari undermined his own status as factory Number One.

Sheenebookazine41
Sheene's superbike outings were given a much needed tonic when the ageing road-based TR750 Kettle was pensioned off and replaced by stretched versions of the RG500 square-four GP machine. The 535 prototype was the work of Frank Sheene and long-serving mechanic Don Mackay and debuted at the end of 1976. Barry is pictured at Brands in 1978 on the factory RG700 is spawned.

A few weeks after his Daytona crash, Sheene bought himself this second-hand Rolls-Royce to cheer himself up. The famous personalised Barry Sheene racing plate followed. This picture was taken at the Match Races at Brands in April 1975. American rider Dave Aldana is the back seat passenger and the driver is Merv Wright, who moved from America to Britain to manage the Texaco Heron Team Suzuki squad the following year. If the picture had been taken a few minutes and few miles down the road it would have captured Aldana introducing the drivers of Kent to the American practice of mooning.

Sheene's first full season as a works Suzuki rider saw him fall out with team-mate Stan Woods (pictured right) when he tried to commandeer his bike to help him win the FIM F750 title. Sheene never had much luck at Silverstone. Here he is pictured racing Suzuki's 'flexi-flier' at the Northants circuit in August 1976. Silverstone took over from the Isle of Man TT as host of the British round of the 500cc world championship the following season but in eight attempts Sheene made the rostrum only twice and never won his home GP.

Sheenebookazine82
The lap record of 137.150mph Sheene set in winning the 1977 Belgian GP at Spa-Francorchamps remains the fastest ever at a motorcycle Grand Prix and due to changes in track design it is highly unlikely that it will ever be bettered. Spa was the scene of his first ever GP win in 1971 and he is pictured leading Roberts in 1978.

(You Tube)

Sheene never had much luck at Silverstone. Here he is pictured racing Suzuki's 'flexi-flier' at the Northants circuit in August 1976. The lap record of 137.150mph Sheene set in winning the 1977 Belgian GP at Spa-Francorchamps remains the fastest ever at a motorcycle Grand Prix and due to changes in track design it is highly unlikely that it will ever be bettered. He was trying out the modified Roy Hesketh circuit in Maritzburg, and is here seen at Henry's knee.
