Jarno Saarinen chases down fellow Yamaha rider Phil Read in a 250cc race at Silverstone on 13 August 1972. Saarinen went on to win that year's 250 world title, while Sheene struggled with reliability problems. Sadly, the Finnish ace was killed at the 1973 250cc Monza GP in a multi-bike crash which also claimed the life of Italian champion Renzo Pasolini.

Right to the top, over 11,300 ft on the Pic Veleta in the Sierra Nevada, Spain. Turin enthusiasts Mario Artusio and his father make the climb on their R69S BMW. They are hoping to get an Italian mountain rally jacked up next summer. The Veleta road comes to a stop at the summit and therefore cannot rank as a pass to claim the highest in Europe.

Ducati cruiser
Ducati Cruser - The Cruiser was the first ever scooter ever made by Ducati. It was a very advanced design when it debuted in 1951 with a single cylinder 175cc ohv engine, automatic transmission with a hydraulic torque converter, shaft drive, 12 volt electrics and an electric start – the first on a scooter. With bodywork by Ghia and a two-tone paint job the Cruiser was a very nice piece of kit, but the engine had to be detuned for the Italian market and was limited to 50mph. It was too expensive for a country still bearing the scars of WWII and went out of production after two years with only about 2000 sold.

Scratchers all! The much anticipated clash between the two road racing giants - Hailwood and Agostini - turned out to be a non event at the 1966 Brands Hatch season closer, when after little more than 100 yards from the start, the former's 250cc Honda six threw a rod and day belonged solely to the Italian.

After a chartered taxi ride round the course, followed by a week of practice, a subdued mood crept over the Italian team, who settle instead for a safety-first ride. Mario Ghersi - 13th, Luigi Arcangeli - 14th and Miro Maffais - 20th. Bianchi didn't return to the Isle of Man again until 1960.
