Roofs 003 Left: The present York station, designed by NER architects Thomas Prosser and William Peachey, was opened in 1877. It had 13 platforms and was at that time the largest station in the world. LNER A4 Pacific 4468 Mallard stands awaiting departure for Scarborough on April 26, 1987. The centre roads were removed during electrification work in 1988. BRIAN SHARPE
